Southern Super Series Season Kicks Off at The Rattler

The beginning of another Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco season is just two and a half weeks away.  On Sunday, March 17, the best Super Late Model drivers from the Southeast and beyond will flock to South Alabama Speedway for the 43rd Annual Rattler 250.

“The Rattler 250 at South Alabama has so much tradition.  In recent years, the race has served as an exciting way to kick off the Southern Super Series schedule,” said Southern Super Series Promoter Tim Bryant.  “John Dykes and his family do a fantastic job in preparations for the event.  The race is an early-season event that race fans look forward to, and we’re thrilled to get things going in Opp here in a few weeks.”

In recent weeks, track officials have released important information about the season-opening event.

In 2019, the prestigious Rattler 250 will pay a minimum of $12,000 to win, compared to $10,000 in previous years. The purse will increase based on car count. With a field of 26 or more cars, the winner’s share of the purse will increase to $12,500, while another $500 will be added to the winner’s check if 36 or more cars are present.

On track activity will start Wednesday, March 13 with practice for the track’s local divisions.

On Thursday, March 14, the Southern Super Series Super Late Models will be joined by Pro Late Models for a day of practice at the Kinston, Alabama oval.

The Late Model divisions will be on the race track once again for practice on Friday, March 15 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Later that night, five different local divisions will be competing in feature races.

Saturday, March 16 is qualifying day for the Late Models. Southern Super Series Super Late Model qualifying will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will be followed up with Pro Late Model qualifying.  Feature racing begins at 7 p.m. and will be highlighted by the 13th Annual Grasshopper Pro Late Model Baby Rattler 125.  Modifieds, Mini Cups, and Roadrunners will join the Pro Late Models for their feature events.

The 43rd Annual Rattler 250 will be in the spotlight on Sunday, March 17 as the Southern Super Series stars battle for 250 laps and the opportunity to meet the famous Alabama rattlesnake in victory lane.  An autograph session will be held from 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. leading into pre-race ceremonies at 12:15. The green flag for the 43rd Annual Rattler 250 is slated to wave at approximately 1 p.m. CT.

NASCAR Gander Outdoor Truck Series driver Harrison Burton is the defending winner of the Rattler 250.  Burton, who races for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the Truck Series, will be back in the No. 12 with Wimmer Motorsports to defend his crown.
